  • What is Hydrosol?
Simply said, hydrosols are aromatic waters that remain when aromatic plant material is steam or hydro distilled. After distillation what remains is oil (essential) on top of infused water (hydrosol). This resulting water is infused with the plants water soluble components. Suzanne Catty, author of Hydrosols: The Next Aromatherapy uses the following definition, "Hydrosols are the condensate water co-produced during the steam- or hydro-distillation of plant material for aromatherapeutic purposes." Further explaining,"Hydrosols contain all of the plant in every drop… Here we have the water-soluble components, the essential oil molecules, the very fluid that was flowing through the plant cells when the plant was collected. It’s all there in a matrix of water that is so much more than water…” Hydrosols, in general, are made through the same process as essential oils but are often much gentler. They are wonderful for those with sensitive skin as hydrosols can be applied to the skin undiluted with concern of irritation.
  • What is an Essential Oil?
Essential Oils are concentrated extractions from plants. A process called distillation (most often steam or hydro) turns the "essence" of an aromatic plant into a liquefied form. Essential oils not only smell great but have wide range of medicinal, recreational and therapeutic uses including reduce stress, treat fungal infections (they also have antiviral and antibacterial properties), and help you sleep. • What are the differences between Essential Oils and Hydrosols
Although they are created through the same process and contain some similar properties, Hydrosols have a much higher water content. Hydrosols have a more subtle scent and do not need to be diluted before being applied onto the skin. Essential Oils are highly concentrated oil-soluble essences of plant material (most often floral). Hydrosols are the "water essence" of the same plant material used to obtain that essential oil. Hydrosol is the water collected during the distillation process of plant material into an essential oil. (As Pictured Below).
